Here, the conductor elements are stranded about a core or support core of generally circular cross section. To prevent the individual or group of conductor elements from untwisting, the conductor elements are typically twisted together, that is, in a helical manner, before or during the stranding process. The conductor elements may be strung, for example, onto at least one insulating element in the form of a cable sheath of a cable or onto the cable core or the support core in the form of an outer conductor of a coaxial cable.
The individual conductor elements or groups of conductor elements are stranded so that the conductor elements or groups of conductor elements are intertwined or twisted together in an interlocking manner. This twisting process must be performed in such a way that the individual or group of conductor elements is protected from being damaged. The interlocking twisting process requires the conductor elements to be twisted together in a defined sequence, in other words, a defined twist sequence.
Conventionally, conductor elements that have to be twisted together have been twisted together by manual twisting. Here, a human operator moves a cable into a twisting machine, typically, via a hand mechanism that is manually moved into the twisting machine, and the twisting is performed in an automated manner.
In more recent times, attempts have been made to automate the interlocking twisting process. For example, it is known to determine the twist sequence by applying a twist force to the conductor elements and by measuring the twist sequence with respect to a reference position. It is further known that the twist force can be applied with a special twisting apparatus that includes a mechanical drive unit for rotation and a pressurized liquid or pneumatic drive unit, so that the cable can be rotated. The rotary motion of the cable can be detected by optical, optical-magnetic, magnetic or force sensor arrangements.
It is further known to determine the twist sequence by applying a twisting torque to the conductor elements and to measure the twist sequence with respect to a reference position. This may be done with the aid of a torque measuring arrangement. The torque measuring arrangement detects a torque by a strain gauge that is mounted on the insulating element.
